English
At Robert Piggott CE Schools, language and literacy are seen as essential to children's overall development and foundational to all learning. The school's English curriculum aims to:
-
Foster a lifelong enjoyment and enthusiasm for English.
-
Ensure progressive development in all strands of the English National Curriculum.
-
Enable all children to achieve high standards in English.
The curriculum is mapped out in long-term and medium-term plans, derived from the National Curriculum, and broken down into daily learning objectives. Teachers collaborate to plan lessons for mixed year groups and abilities.
Writing within our schools focusses on immersing ourselves in text stimuli through 'Talk for Writing' where we learn to read as a writer, understanding key features and vocabulary used before innovating our own sustained pieces.
As a 'Reading School,' Robert Piggott promotes reading at every opportunity, exposing children to a wide range of texts and fostering strong school-home links to support reading development.
Phonics teaching begins in EYFS, with daily lessons in Reception and Key Stage 1 using the 'Read Write Inc' programme. In Key Stage 2, daily guided reading lessons and text-based English lessons further develop key reading skills with the support of 'Master Readers'.
